Welcome to Gunton Wood Originally part of the gardens surrounding Gunton Old Hall, the 3½ hectares of Gunton Wood degenerated into a wilderness of rank vegetation and sycamores after the Manorial Hall was pulled down in 1963. So it was a daunting task that confronted a group of residents in 1997 when they resolved to restore the Wood to its former glory. One year later GWCP was formally constituted, a management plan by Suffolk Wildlife Trust was in place, tools were purchased using grant funding and work commenced to clear the mountains of rubbish that had accumulated over time. After 20,000 work party hours spread over 10 years, the Wood has been transformed with 3000 new trees, paths, seats and a pond to provide a haven for wildlife and nature lovers. Amongst many honours, including designation as a Nature Reserve, the Group has won the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service and its 200 members often participate in social events such as Continental coach trips. Our Location Located in Lowestoft, Suffolk, Gunton Wood has an OSGB Grid Ref of TM543958. Locate Gunton Wood using Google Maps UK (Please note that the above link uses a Grid Ref of TM542958 which is more 'centred' on the Wood.)

Latest Newsletter Gunton Wood 2009 ended with a blast from the Arctic. Gunton shivered with the rest of the country under a blanket of snow which, at first, turned everything into a wonderland but there was a huge sigh of relief when it finally melted away, only to return again at the end of January. How tiny birds weighing just a few grams manage to survive temperatures of minus 5 degrees is nothing short of miraculous. [Incidentally, 2 or 3 Firecrests are over-wintering around the Church, according to Nick Blacker and James Wright; you can check their website Birdman of Gunton for details]. Results of the recent RSPB Garden Birdwatch survey will probably show a dramatic reduction in some species, particularly Greenfinches, which this year seem to be few and far between. Read More ... What's New The possible relocation of the Lowestoft and Yarmouth Rugby Club to the Church Field immediately adjacent to Gunton Wood would cause the most dramatic changes to the Gunton area in recent history. GWCP is very much in favour of improved facilities for the Club but believes that far more suitable locations are available. A copy of GWCP's formal letter of protest to the Council can be downloaded here alongside other documentation: WDC Rugby Club GWCP Letter of Objection - Relocation of Lowestoft and Yarmouth Rugby Club Proposed Site Plan - Colour annotations by B Shimmield dated 11th December 2008 Site Photographs dated 5th December 2008
